My PRT Coordinator, Karen Gill, came to observe me teaching today. I had prepared a Hapara lesson for one of my Year 9 classes - 9A. The focus was on reading scales within our measurement unit. Overall, my appraisal was very positive and I felt like the lesson ran smoothly, even though events did occur that could have turned into a disruption. Karen's only piece of advice for the lesson was to perhaps implement a "3b4me" strategy. This is where students ask three of their peers for help before asking the teacher. This will help to manage the sometimes demanding nature of the students when they need that extra help. Since this observation I have been implementing the 3b4me strategy and have found it be really beneficial. I have definitely noticed that I am being called on less often - this means I have had more time to work in small groups / one on one with students who are really struggling. It has also given the more advanced students opportunities to share their knowledge and extend their thinking in order to teach to a peer. I have also implemented this strategy across my other classes with a similar outcome. I did find that my other Year 9 class did not respond as positively to this strategy - there are not enough students in the class who are capable or comfortable for teaching their peers and it would lead to off-task behaviour. So instead I am using a "help list" on the whiteboard. This is where the students sign up for my help.
