After collecting baseline data, through observations, experiences, students voice, and assessment results, I was able to determine the focus for my teaching inquiry for 2016. I am going to focus on integrating learner agency into my Year 9 classes to see if it acts as a way to improve behavioural issues and increase engagement in their learning. Will it work as a means to make the students take more responsibility for their learning?
To begin this inquiry I have made up a visual wall display that the students will have access to read and interact with for the remainder of the year.
I have decided to use four groups: guided learner, self-managing learner, self-directed learner, and self-agentic learner. Next term, each student will self-assess which group they believe that they belong too based on their work ethic from this term. They will need to "prove" why they believe they are in the group they select. From there on the students will continue to self-assess where they are at and will have the freedom to move themselves higher, or lower, after consultation with me.
