Today (16th June) I was observed by Karen Gill, PCT Coordinator. Below are the notes that she took during the lesson.
Reflection as at July 9th:
Have begun creating warm up's electronically where possible to create a better flow at the beginning of my lessons. When I am required to draw on the board I am making sure to get these up on the board before the period begins as much as possible. For the last few lessons I have also tried out verbally presenting my warm up's - this works really well as the students need to make sure they are listening to what I am saying and it also helps those students who struggle with reading in the class.
I have re-introduced a seating plan for this class. It is still a work in progress to find the best combo of students for each table group. I have noticed a significant increase in focus and peer teaching, and a decrease in off-task chatter. It is still not perfect though!
I making a conscious effort to fill in the WALT section of my whiteboard. So far, so good.
I have amended my discipline system to now have a "sad face" and "happy face". So instead of the board only displaying negative behaviours it now shows positive ones too. The students like aiming to get their names under the happy face and are asking me for ways that they can do so.
Have had a few group activities since this observation and have reduced groups to 2-3 people. It is definitely working a lot better and it is good to see less 'by standing' in the activities. Having the smaller groups is definitely forcing those students to offer input and ideas. In my last group quiz I made a rule that any member of the group may be asked to explain the answer otherwise they could lose their point. This meant that even if some of the students couldn't initially get the answer themselves they were still having the concept explained to them.
