Getting To Know My Students

Getting to know your students is perhaps the single most important thing a teacher can do each year. The student - teacher relationship has been widely researched as being a key contributor to increased learning and positive experiences at school. Personally, relationship building is at the heart of my teaching philosophy. I want to know what interests my students have and what makes them tick and in return I share aspects of my life with them.

Eventually, this helps to build trust and also shows the students that I am, in fact, human too. The building of these relationships takes time...."Rome wasn't built in a day"....but to get things started I gave my students a quick survey (form) to fill out. This form asked them about how they feel about mathematics, to assess what they believe their mathematical abilities are, how they like to learn, and to share some "fun" information about themselves - what are their hobbies, where do they want to travel in the world, what languages can they speak...etc.

As the year progresses I will continue to build these relationships, build trust from my students, build trust in them, and create a fantastic learning environment for everyone.
